In Congress, seniority is everything.
You stay around long enough and you get the plum assignments, no matter how bad or crazy you are.
Case in point: Representative Maxine Waters.
She’s a Democrat from California and we’ve shined our spotlight on her more than once.
The Tea Party gave her an award for the dumbest member of Congress.
We’ve decided she’s racist.
She’s under multiple investigations for multiple things.
She will take over as the senior Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee after Barney Frank retires.
She could become chairwoman of the panel if Democrats retake the House.
While banks and other financial institutions often battled Frank, he was seen as someone they could work with.
Wall Street views Waters as more of an opponent.
They say she’s “too much of a bomb thrower.”
Could Democratic leaders assign someone other than Waters?
Of course – but probably not.
Jumping over Waters to another Democrat would cause all kinds of problems with the Congressional Black Caucus.
Waters won’t say whether she’ll fight for the position but did release this statement:
“As the next most senior member of the committee, the current ranking member on the Capital Markets subcommittee and the former chair of the Housing and Community Opportunity subcommittee, I hope to use my experience to continue and expand his work in the committee.”
Sounds like she wants it to us.
