Mazie Hirono wants a do-over

2 Jul

So, Mazie Hirono does an about-face and decides to debate Ed Case before the primary election.

Here’s the conventional wisdom about debates: If you are the incumbant or leading in the polls, you have nothing to gain and a lot to lose by debating.

If you are ahead, why give the other guy a chance to show you up.

So, what’s going on here?

Here’s some guesses and we’ll see what one turns out to be correct:

1) Mazie is not leading in her internal polls and she needs a debate to try to make Case look bad.

2) Hirono has some juicy negative information that will “leak” a couple of days before the debate to she can hammer him about it on TV.

3) It’s all shibai and she’ll beg off in a couple of weeks saying it couldn’t be worked into her schedule.

We suspect #1 may be the real reason with #3 close behind.

As for #2, we have seen Hirono doesn’t need a debate planned to go negative.

She’s already slapped around Linda Lingle who she’ll probably face in the general election – if she wins the primary.

We’ll stick our neck out and predict she won’t.

I fear she will win despite not deserving to because Case is the hated haole who dared run against the demi-god Akaka in an alleged democracy. I’ll place my $$ for the bet on #3. I recall vividly how Akaka dodged all 3 debates w/ Pat Saiki.
