Just a note: It’s not the same without the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon. It’s amazing how badly that non-profit has mishandled everything. The kids are the ones that will suffer.

Labor Day is a federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September that celebrates the economic and social contributions of workers.

It pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of the American labor force.

It also symbolizes the end of summer for many Americans, and is celebrated with parties, parades and athletic events.

Oregon was the first state to make it a holiday in 1887.

By the time it became a federal holiday in 1894, thirty states officially celebrated Labor Day.

Over the years its developed a political theme with appearances by candidates for office, especially in election years.

It’s also, like most holidays, become an important sales day for the retail industry causing some of those employed in the retail sector not only work on Labor Day, but work longer hours.

Labor Day has come to be celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of the summer.

In high society, Labor Day is considered the last day of the year when it is fashionable to wear white.

For those not in high society, it marks the beginning of the NFL season.
