Random politics

Random-political-stuff-sizedWe’re sure you know Francis Scott Key wrote “The Star-Spangled Banner” in 1814 after the British set fire to Washington.
President Herbert Hoover officially made it the national anthem in 1931.
But several hundred people now think it’s time for a change.
A new petition on We the People is asking President Obama to change our nation’s anthem to “Party in the USA” by Miley Cyrus.
With more than 324 million views on YouTube, changing the anthem to the pop song is “what is best for this country,” according to the petition.
The petition has a total of 825 signatures by last night.
It needs 100,000 for a White House response.

Yes, it’s a little absurd.

All the dumb stuff isn’t coming from just the Republicans.
Democrat Ohio state Senator Nina Turner is proposing a bill forcing men to “see a sex therapist, receive a cardiac stress test and get a notarized affidavit signed by a sexual partner affirming impotency” before allowing them to get a prescription for Viagra or other erectile dysfunction drugs.
Turner said if state policymakers want to legislate women’s health choices…they should also be able to legislate men’s reproductive health.

And then – Looking for an explanation for the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act, Pat Robertson speculated on the 700 Club that Justice Anthony Kennedy may have been influenced by law clerks on his staff who “happen to be gays.”

Finally – A new Gallup survey finds a majority of Americans back three political reform ideas, including 68% who favor national referenda on key issues if enough voters sign a petition to request a popular vote on the issue. In addition, 61% favor a shortened presidential campaign lasting five weeks in the fall of an election year and 58% want a nationwide primary election to select each party’s candidates for president.

It’s got our vote.
